Byron Bay
Byron Bay
Byron Bay is the eastern most beautiful setting of Australia on the New South Wales north coast. It is famous for its alternative lifestyles and attracts people from all walks of life. The natural beauty of the beaches, lush hinterland, surfing, yoga, shopping, clubbing, dining, drinking, favourable climate and diving are the reasons Byron Bay has grown and prospered in the last few years. Byron Bay is about 1½ hours south of Brisbane and 40 minutes south of the Gold Coast.

Byron Bay offers a year round tropical paradise of beaches and rainforests with the average temperature in summer of 27 degrees and 22 degrees in winter. When visiting this region all roads lead to the township of Byron Bay which is dominated by the Cape Byron Lighthouse. By night the lighthouse is Australia's most powerful beacon, by day the backdrop for hang gliders which soar in the thermals off the Cape.

Those who prefer more down to earth explorations can meander along the world famous Cape Byron Walking track and watch dolphins waltz in the waves below or play with the surfers in the waves at Wategos Beach. Not to be outdone by the Dolphins those giants of the deep, the Humpback Whales can be seen breaching and playing off the waters off the Cape as they migrate north in July/August and return in September/October.

Byron Bay is small and compact, so finding one's way around is easy. The railway station and bus stop are adjacent to the Byron Visitor Centre. Byron Bay is a town replete with accommodation, but it is not necessarily cheap, since demand keeps up well with, and sometimes even outstrips, supply. Even backpackers accommodation tends to be rather more expensive than one might expect. This small town caters very much to the backpacker market, so there are pubs, and a multitude of different and mostly moderately priced food establishments. Please use our navigation on the left of this page or the Byron Bay site map for Byron Bay information.
